At 44 years old, Floyd Mayweather (50-0-0) is still looking for ways to make money from boxing. The retired boxer is gearing up to fight YouTube star Logan Paul (0-1) in an exhibition bout. Prior to the bout, Mayweather gave an insight on his estimated purse, why he keeps fighting, and most importantly, why Logan Paul?
Mayweather has received serious criticism over the choice of his opponent. Some pundits even claimed that his bout with Logan Paul could taint the sport of boxing and his legacy.
In an interview with Rob Moore, Mayweather explained why he is fighting Paul.
“I can fight a fighter right now, and I can guarantee myself $35 million, eventually probably make $50 million. Or me and Logan Paul or a YouTuber, we can go out entertain and have fun and make nine figures, $100 million or more,” Floyd Mayweather said.
Floyd’s statement holds water, as Paul — as of March 21, 2021 — has over 22.9 million followers on YouTube, 5.9 million on Twitter, 18.9 million on Instagram, and 11.5 million on TikTok.
Paul, 25, sold over $1.2 million pay-per-views for his first amateur fight on August 25, 2018, against fellow YouTuber KSI. Although reports claimed that the second fight failed in the UK (216,000 buys), promoter Eddie Hearn said the event sold more PPVs than Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Anthony Joshua 1.
Floyd Mayweather Promises Entertainment and Admits to Misleading People about the Tenshin Nasukawa Fight Purse
Floyd Mayweather explained why he keeps fighting despite retiring from the sport. He also announced what to expect from the Logan Paul fight.
“Everybody thinks that retired means at home, with your feet kicked up and you picking up weight, and you grow old and your hair getting gray. I prefer to go out and still entertain and have fun. Just because I go out and entertain, have fun doesn’t mean that I still want to fight. I mean, I still want to fight for 12 rounds. I think we got a six-round exhibition, and I think it’s gonna be very entertaining for the people. I think the people are gonna love it.”
Floyd then clarified that the $100 million figure is not a guaranteed payout, but a projection.
“Money Mayweather” is not new to the world of exhibitions. He last competed in a three-round exhibition against Rizin’s star, Tenshin Nasukawa. The bout ended terribly for the Japanese as Mayweather crushed the young kickboxer in the first round.
Before the bout, Floyd declared he would make $9 million for the bout. However, in his recent interview with Moore, Mayweather backtracked on his statement and claimed he made much more than that.
“I did an exhibition in Tokyo, Japan. I think 40,000 people showed up for three rounds. I told people that I made nine million. But actually, I think I made more money than that. I just tell people what I wanted to tell them.”
Mayweather vs. Paul was originally set to take place on February 20, 2021. However, the bout was postponed because of unknown reasons. The fight is still on, but a new date is yet to be announced. Fans expect Mayweather to school his rival despite being the smaller fighter.
