George Kambosos Jr. (19-0) secured the biggest paycheck of his life when Triller placed a massive $6,180,000 bid to host his next fight. The Australian boxer will take on “The Takeover” Teofimo Lopez Jr. (16-0) later this year.
In a recent interview with FightHype.com, Kambosos Jr. gave his thoughts on the purse bid and his upcoming fight.
“It’s huge news. That’s massive, probably the biggest news in Australian boxing. This is huge, and I can’t wait, man,” Kambosos Jr. said. “The world was shocked yesterday with the outcome of the purse bid. Now it’s just up to me and [Teofimo] Lopez. I’m coming head-on, and I’m excited for this fight.”
The IBF mandatory challenger stands to make $2,106,300 minus his promoter’s percentage for the bout. However, Kambosos Jr. claimed he does not care about the money. It’s all about the belts and legacy for the Aussie.
George Kambosos Jr. on Money and Fame
“Excuse my French but f**k the money. F**k the fame that comes with it. I got one mission, and that’s beating this guy and taking all his belts. I honestly do not care about the money. The money is beautiful. It’s gonna secure my family, got two young kids. I got good people. They’re gonna make sure the money’s invested properly.”
Lopez Jr. retained his IBF lightweight title and won the WBA (Super), WBO, The Ring, and WBC Franchise lightweight titles after dismantling Vasyl Lomachenko on October 17, 2020. Many fans and media outlets even consider him the undisputed lightweight champion, even though Devin Haney is currently holding the WBC (Regular) lightweight belt.
Moreover, Kambosos Jr. said he wants to go down in the history books as The Greatest Australian Fighter ever! Sorry, Robert Whittaker.
“I’ll continue making the sacrifices. I’ll make even more sacrifices for this fight because this is the biggest fight of my career. This is life-changing where I become a legend. This is where I become the best fighter ever in Australian history.”
The bout is expected to take place in May. Triller will undoubtedly club this fight with celebrity and legendary boxing matches. It is rumored that Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson could end up fighting on the same card.
