Kamaru Usman Reveals Why He Called Out Jorge Masvidal, Money Is Not the Only Reason

Immediately after defeating Gilbert Burns at UFC 258, reigning welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, called out one of the biggest attractions in MMA. Seems like a good move, right? Not really. On paper, this fight makes no sense. The duo has already fought at UFC 251 where Usman dominated “Gamebred.” If Usman “dominated” Masvidal, why would he call out someone he already defeated?

The answer to that question is simple. Usman’s second title defense against Masvidal generated over $1.3 million pay-per-view buys in the midst of a pandemic, and the bout was barely competitive. Jorge was simply trying to survive Kamaru Usman’s relentless attacks.

Although Usman controlled Masvidal for the majority of the fight, fans — even Masvidal — claimed that a full training camp (which he did not have for that fight) would have yielded different results. These statements did not sit well with the champion. In a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Usman admitted that the excuses made after UFC 251 and the potential money-making opportunity motivated him to call out his former foe.

“I’m 4-0 in title fights, and all four, to be honest, I’ve completely dominated – completely. But one of those four — there’s an excuse.”

Usman further iterated that he will beat Masvidal on his worst day. After a couple of insults, Usman revealed what actually triggered him to call out the Cuban-American fighter.

“For some reason, he believes that he has a shot that he can beat me. And what even kinda ticked me off, what brought this on, was after the fight — I think it might have been his post-fight — I was walking by. They were taking me in the medical. And I’m walking by the room. It just so happens, at the same time, when I hear him saying, ‘With more preparation, I believe I have what it takes to beat that man.’ That is not words that I ever wanna hear out of an opponent of mine. Never!”

Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal Staredown

Unlike the outcome of the first fight, Kamaru Usman believes he can finish Jorge Masvidal in the second one. Let’s not forget that both fighters fought on short notice and were not at their best. A second clash should end the chapter between Jorge Masvidal and Kamaru Usman.

But at this stage, do we need that fight? Especially when we have Colby Covington, who has a stronger case for a rematch than Masvidal.
