Number 5 ranked UFC welterweight contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson (15-4-1) finally responded to Colby Covington’s (15-2-0) verbal assault.

After taking a shot at welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and BMF titleholder Jorge Masvidal, number 1 ranked UFC welterweight fighter Colby “Chaos” Covington took a dig at Stephen Thompson.

“This guy is a 40-year-old man,” Colby Covington said to Submission Radio. “He’s claiming to be a boy. What? I guess you can identify these days as whatever you want because if he wants to be a boy — he’s a 40-year-old man, he drives around in his karate van with karate kids, and he watches cartoon. What’s scary about that? There’s nothing scary about that. If his dad was a real man, he would have put his son in wrestling, not karate. The guy’s irrelevant.”

Stephen Thompson Not Impressed by Colby Covington

Thompson, popular for his calm demeanor, responded to Covington in the comments section of the video. “Wonderboy,” who is usually not called out by other fighters, appreciated Colby for the shout-out.

The 38-year-old got to elaborate on his comment when he appeared as a guest on the same show on March 17, 2020. As expected, Thompson was not mad about the incident.

“I thought it was pretty cool because not a whole lot of people will say my name. Not a whole lot of people have talked about me. And I’m glad somebody did, which was Colby. And I couldn’t help but kinda laugh because he was funny about it. He cracks me up, you know?”

Thompson then challenged Covington to come up with a better insult and called him out for a fight.

“I thought it was great. But it was funny because I’ve been in the UFC for almost eight years. Like, that’s all you got? Is that all you got? Come on, man. I guess I gave him like a week or two. He’ll come up with something. Yeah, I thought it was funny. I had a little fun with that. He said I wasn’t as scary. If I’m not that scary, then fight me, bro. I don’t think I heard anything back from him.”

In the past, Thompson stated he does not like Covington’s persona and called it “cringe.” He also expressed his desire to poke Covington in the eye. However, he acknowledged the good side of Covington as well.

“I don’t like his persona. Now, him as a legit human being, I hear he is a great guy,” Thompson told Submission Radio in February 2021.

Thompson last fought on December 19, 2020. He defeated Geoff Neal via a unanimous decision. Colby, on the other hand, TKO’ed (rib injury) former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley on September 19, 2020.
